The Whig Party of Lincoln, Daniel Webster and Henry Clay was dissolved in 1854 and became the base of the Republican Party, formed to face the threat of slavery. The Whig spirit survived however. Since then, practical, pragmatic, common sense politicians - Republicans, Democrats and independents - have worked together and frequently solved many of our nation's problems.
Those days seem to be over. In recent years efforts to find common sense consensus on critical issues have been crushed by ideology and blind partisan politics. The grass roots of both political parties have been plowed under by single-issue factions, well funded by powerful interests intent on capturing them to advance their narrow agendas. Is there no voice left for moderate Americans?
There is.
The Modern Whig Party was organized in 2007 by veterans
of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq who were dismayed by their nation's
deepening ideological divide. Clearly, a large number of their fellow
citizens were feeling the same way; within a year of its creation, the
Modern Whig Party had attracted more than 25,000 supporters nationally. Since then, five other small moderate political parties have merged with the Modern Whig Party. It has become the national party representing moderate average Americans.
And now we are in Nevada. The Nevada Modern Whig Party intends to build an organization with sufficient support and resources to get moderate pragmatic political candidates back on the ballot. We will be working closely with the national party to develop platforms from the ground up - listening again to the voices of average Americans.
